Frequently asked questions

Always happy to help.

Here are the answers to some of our most commonly asked questions, to view the answers click the question of interest.

  • How long have you been established?
    • 0800 HANDYMAN was established in 2001. Since then we have completed over 70,000 jobs for around 28,000 customers. And over 98% of customers participating in our satisfaction telephone survey advise they’d happily recommend our service to others.
  • Why have I not heard of you before?
    • We don’t advertise much – a big proportion of our business comes through referrals from satisfied customers, and we like it that way. It means we can spend more time focusing on delivering great service, and less time on deciding where we should advertise. Please bear this in mind when you use us – the success of our business relies on word-of-mouth, so do pass on the word if you are happy with our service.
  • Why are you called 0800handyman?
    • Our name spells out our phone number. Dial 0800, then begin spelling out ‘handyman’ using the letters on your telephone keypad and you will get through to us (0800 H-A-N-D-Y-M-A-N = 0800 4-2-6-3-9-6-2-6).
  • How much does your service cost?
    • £40.00 + vat for the first half hour, £20.00 + vat per half hour thereafter. Evening work is charged at a 50% premium. Materials are charged separately. We add a mark-up to parts we supply to reflect the fact that we are using our expertise to find and select the right materials. A surcharge may apply for delivery of a ladder or specialist equipment. We do not charge for parking or congestion charges.
  • Do your handymen come with all the right tools?
    • Yes! All our handymen carry a full range of tools to tackle a huge number of different jobs. They also carry a wide selection of small parts (screws, nails, wall plugs, plumbing connections and so forth).
  • How can you fit all your tools on a motorbike?
    • Yes, we’re very resourceful! Our motorbikes have plenty of storage so a full range of tools can be carried. We also have vans, which will deliver bulky items such as ladders, materials and large power tools, to site when necessary.
  • Do you do free estimates?
    • Generally, we can give you a good idea over the telephone of how long a job is likely to take. You can then book someone in, and when they arrive they will confirm or revise the estimate based on what they find at the job. If it is clearly going to take a lot longer than expected, and you decide not to go ahead, we won’t charge you anything. If you are happy to go ahead then our handyman will do the job there and then. For larger jobs, like fitting a new bathroom, we would usually make a separate visit first to give you an estimate.
  • Are you insured?
    • Yes, we carry £2m of public liability insurance.
  • How quickly can you come out?
    • We are not really an emergency service – most of the work we do is booked in a couple of days in advance. We can often squeeze jobs in on the same day as they are booked, though, so it is worth calling to check availability.
  • Do you work weekends?
    • Yes, we work on Saturdays, for which we usually charge a 50% premium over our standard rates.
  • Do you offer a 24hr service?
    • No – usual hours are 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday. We can do jobs in the evening or on Saturdays for a 50% premium. Our office is open from 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday.
  • Do you have any GasSafe registered engineers?
    • No. We operate with highly competent, multi-skilled personnel who can handle a wide range of repair jobs, but we are not GasSafe registered, so we don’t do any work with gas.
  • Do you have any NICEIC accredited electricians?
    • No. We employ general handymen, who can all do a wide range of jobs, but we limit our electrical work to replacement work, not new wiring. For new wiring (e.g. adding an entirely new lighting point) you should contact a specialist electrician. For replacing lights, switches and so on, we are guys to call.
  • How do you know that the handymen you employ are reliable?
    • Unlike many firms in the building and maintenance industry, our handymen are either employed by us full-time, or are licensed operators. Of the numerous job and franchise applications we receive we only interview about a third of applicants, and offer jobs or franchises to a third of those we interview. In other words, we reject over 90% of applicants and only appoint those are i) properly skilled in the sort of work we do ii) who are polite and well presented and iii) are friendly and understand the importance of excellent customer service. Our team is highly conscientious, a fact supported by our excellent customer satisfaction rating.
  • Will I have to wait in all day for your handyman to show up?
    • No – we give specific one hour slots in which we aim to arrive. We are nearly always bang on time, but sometimes (particularly towards the end of the day) we might be a little late. But we will always call you well in advance to let you know our revised estimated arrival time.
  • How big a job can you take on?
    • We’re small job experts, and so the majority of the work we do is completed within an hour or so. Simple jobs often take less than 30 minutes. However, we also regularly book half or full days, to work through ‘To Do’ lists or carry out decorating work. We also have a Special Works team that is geared to refurbishment projects, such as re-modelling kitchens, bathrooms and offices, or for external and interior re-decoration.
  • What areas do you cover?
    • We currently operate across Greater London, Surrey and the Horsham and Crawley area.  Depending on our workload we may be able to service locations in some surrounding areas. We are expanding, with franchise opportunities now available, offering the exciting chance of business ownership for those with the ambition and aptitude.
  • How can I pay?
    • We accept cash, cheque, credit card or debit card.
  • I can’t dial your 0800 number from abroad – what is your landline number?
    • Our regular landline number is 020 8481 2120
  • Do you offer credit payment terms?
    • Yes, providing you’re a limited company. Subject to a successful credit check we would be prepared to set you up as an account, which allows payment to be made within 30 days of the job.  Contact us for a Credit Application form.
